Two Massachusetts attorneys will be honored for their commitment to increasing access to justice for the poor through their work with the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.  Janet F. Aserkoff of Rappaport, Aserkoff & Gelles will be the recipient of the 2009 MBF President’s Award at the Eastern Mass. grantee reception to be held in Boston on Sept. 23.  Scott W. Foster of Bulkley, Richardson and Gelinas in Springfield, will receive the award at the Western Mass. grantee reception held in Springfield on October 1st.

The MBF President’s Award is given to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service to the Massachusetts legal community through volunteerism, leadership and commitment to increasing the availability of legal services for low-income citizens of the state.

Both Aserkoff and Foster are active volunteers in the Foundation’s IOLTA Grants Program.  In doing so, they have donated countless hours to benefit the citizens of the Commonwealth by ensuring the judicious distribution of IOLTA funds to legal aid organizations across the state.

Aserkoff, an Oliver Wendell Holmes Life Fellow, has been an active MBF Fellow since 1980 and has participated in the grant review process for over a decade, lending her considerable knowledge and expertise to ensure that MBF funds are directed where they are needed most.

Foster, who joined the MBF in 2005, has not only been active in grant review activities since joining, but also stepped up to serve on the 2007/ 2008 Fellowship Committee and has been a champion of the Foundation in Western Mass.

“The Foundation is so very fortunate to have the support of these two attorneys,” remarked MBF President Laurence M. Johnson.  “In addition to their financial contributions, our grantees and the clients they serve have benefited tremendously from their contributions of time and intellect over the years. They exemplify the stewardship that has come to be emblematic of the MBF.”
