MBF UPDATE
June 2010

MBF Thanks the Mass. Banking Community

During the annual MBF Grant Review, we are reminded of the important role financial institutions who participate in the IOLTA Program play in supporting equal access to justice. The interest earned on attorney IOLTA accounts generates one of the most vital sources of support for civil legal aid for the poor and disadvantaged in our state.

We are grateful to those banks that have chosen to go above and beyond IOLTA participation requirements by assuming the responsibility of being a Leadership Bank. These banks go the distance in demonstrating their support of the community by setting their IOLTA interest rate floor at either 75% of the Federal Funds Target Rate or 1% of APR, whichever is higher.

We've watched IOLTA revenue plummet dramatically in the last two years. Banks providing leadership level interest rates on these accounts are helping us do all we can to sustain our support of civil legal aid in the commonwealth.

If you bank at one of these institutions, you are helping to bolster IOLTA funds. Be sure to let your banker know you appreciate their commitment to serving the community. If your bank is not on the list, encourage them to join. Or, consider moving your accounts to a Leadership Bank.

Please look to the right for a full list of IOLTA Leadership Banks in Massachusetts.  For more information about IOLTA or the Leadership Bank Program, visit www.maiolta.org or contact Jayne Tyrrell at 617-723-9093.

The Boston American Inn of Court honored the MBF at its June 9 Annual Awards Dinner in Boston. The award was presented to the MBF for outstanding service to the administration of justice. The Inn, whose 2009/2010 co-presidents are District Court Justice Hon. Barbara Savitt Pearson and Harvey Weiner, Esq. of Peabody & Arnold in Boston, was founded in 1990 as Massachusetts' first Inn of Court.  The organization brings together attorneys, judges, legal educators and law students to encourage an open exchange of ideas and to promote civility, excellence and professionalism in the profession.

MBF President Joseph P. J. Vrabel accepted the award on behalf of the Foundation and presented a video highlighting the mission and work of the MBF.

"The Foundation is the legal community's best kept secret, providing millions of dollars for legal aid programs for the poor," said Weiner. "It is the state's premier legal charity and every lawyer should know about it and consider supporting it."
